Partnerships
We study disaster to reduce the risk they pose through customized mathematical models. Models, abstract and simplified conceptualizations of the real world, play a central role in both science and decision-making, but they are also prone to bias and misrepresentation. We take a proactive approach to partnering with different scientific disciplines, experienced practitioners, and communities at risk. We celebrate the broad array of perspectives and the way they influence how we perceive, model, navigate, understand, and ultimately change the world around us.
We understand that everyone joins our research group with a different skill set, individual motivations, and ideas for how to make progress on reducing disaster risk. We excitedly welcome this range of skills, motivations and experiences. Acknowledging that science tends to precise answers to narrowly defined problems, we realize that making progress towards reducing disaster risk benefits greatly from the input, criticism and suggestions from partners outside of academia.
Stanford Earth Values and Practices
This is dedicated to Stanford Earth's revised and expanded school-wide Policy on Respectful and Inclusive Behavior (2020). This document represents an important next step in making actionable our long-standing commitment to inclusion and respect. The Stanford Earth Policy is anchored in the University Code of Conduct, extending and elaborating those ideas more specifically into our context at Stanford Earth.
